The Return of EMF: a history

Recently, Way Out Radio welcomed back EMF to the indie scene and the band took Paula backstage for an interview at the legendary Water Rats pub, where Oasis and The Pogues cut their teeth. Watch the video below and read on for a full down low on EMF.

Exploring The Water Rats: A Historic London Music Venue

Located at 328 Grays Inn Road, Kings Cross, London, England, The Water Rats is more than just a live music venue—it's a storied piece of musical history. Originally known as The Pindar of Wakefield until 1992, this establishment was famous for its regular old-time music hall entertainment.

The Water Rats has hosted legendary performances throughout its history. Bob Dylan played his first UK gig here in December 1962. The Pogues (then known as the Pogue Mahones) made their debut on October 4, 1982, alongside Suppose I Laugh, which included Dmytro Morykit. Oasis's debut London performance took place here on January 27, 1994, and The Beta Band played their inaugural show on July 23, 1997.

Acts such as Katy Perry, Sisteray, The Courteeners, Ra Ra Riot, and Vindicated also graced this stage before achieving international acclaim. The venue even hosted The Decemberists' first show outside North America on October 1, 2004.

Originally built in 1517 and later reconstructed in 1878, The Water Rats has a rich historical legacy. It was once frequented by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and housed a regular 'Old Time Music Hall' until the 1980s. In 1986, the venue was acquired by the Grand Order of Water Rats, leading to its current name and continued status as a beloved hub for live music and entertainment.

EMF: A Resurgent Force in Alternative Rock

Hailing from Cinderford, Gloucestershire, EMF burst onto the music scene in the early 1990s, leaving an indelible mark with their infectious indie rock sound. After a successful initial run from 1989 to 1997, including chart-topping hits like "Unbelievable" and the acclaimed debut album Schubert Dip, the band took a lengthy hiatus. Fast forward to April 2022, and EMF returned with a bang, releasing their first album of new material in 27 years—Go Go Sapiens.

The Early Years: Formation and Rise to Fame

EMF's journey is as diverse as their music. Initially formed by a group of well-known musicians in the Forest of Dean music scene, including James Atkin, Ian Dench, and Derry Brownson, EMF quickly rose to fame with their energetic performances and catchy tunes. Their breakthrough single "Unbelievable" soared to number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, catapulting EMF into international stardom.

Chart-Topping Success: Schubert Dip and Beyond

The band's evolution continued with albums like Schubert Dip, featuring hits like "I Believe" and "Children". Despite subsequent challenges, including lineup changes and mixed album performances, EMF's influence endured.

Triumphs and Tragedy: Reunions and Personal Loss

In the wake of tragedy following Zac Foley's passing in 2002, EMF embarked on sporadic reunions, culminating in a triumphant return to the stage in 2012 at the Lakefest. This momentum carried them into the present day, with the release of Go Go Sapiens, showcasing a renewed creativity and passion for their craft.

The Resurgence: Go Go Sapiens and Contemporary Relevance

EMF's latest offering, Go Go Sapiens, is a testament to their enduring spirit and musical prowess. Tracks like "Sister Sandinista" highlight the band's ability to blend nostalgia with contemporary flair, solidifying their place as a formidable force in alternative rock. With a recent UK tour and a storied history behind them, EMF continues to captivate audiences, proving that their music is as relevant now as it was during their heyday.
