THE DONNAS: SPEND THE NIGHT Album Review

THE DONNAS
SPEND THE NIGHT: EXPANDED EDITION
(Cherry Red)
6/10

Dubbed as one of the greatest girl groups to come out of the 90’s, the Donna’s have reissued their hit album ‘Spend The Night’, this time as an expanded edition including 5 bonus tracks. The band includes vocals by Brett Anderson, guitar by Allison Robertson, bass by Maya Ford and drums by Torry Castellano, known otherwise as their stage names Donna A, Donna R, Donna F, Donna C, they put out their first independently released album in 1997. This band of all-girl Californian surf punks chimes in with hard rock sing-along ‘It’s on the Rocks’, followed by their top 20 hit ‘Take It Off’.  The album has all of the basic punk ideas of early Ramones tracks, mixed with the cat clawing lyrics of a rebellious teen girl. Originally released in 2002 as their 5th studio album, the record mixes grimy, glamorous rock and roll with elements of pop punk and a degree of humour. Tracks like ‘All Messed Up’ and ‘Dirty Denim’ show the commercial intent for this band, it is the kind of album you would buy your teenage daughter for Christmas with its fast living, too cool for school, girl next door attitude. Inspired by ACDC, Sex Pistols, Madonna and The Runaways, the band has a gloriously witty, garage rock sound, set off by Donna A’s Snarling vocals.

At times it’s uneasy to know whether the band are objectifying themselves or empowering themselves as sex symbols, but with such basic lyrical content, I don’t think we should delve too deeply into any implied meaning behind them.

Post Punk Dark Pop

JORDAN STEAD (Bass)/ “POSS” STRICKLAND (Vocals/Guitar)/ STEVE WHITFIELD (Guitar/Vocals) / ASH (Drums)

Leeds based KLAMMER put a contemporary twist on the post-punk vibe. Although there’s plenty of hooks in their songs there’s an edgy, dark broodiness coursing through the sound of the band.
Klammer came to life in 2014, drawing from the members’ shared love for all things angular, dark, loud and melodic.

They’ve shared stages with the likes of Richie Ramone, The Membranes, Art Brut, Department S and 999.

In August 2016 the band played to a capacity crowd at The 100 Club in London supporting Penetration.

KLAMMER. joined UNDER DOGZ RECORDS in August 2015. Their 2nd album “KLAMMER” was released in Spring 2016. To coincide with the release, the band toured the U.K. with Richie Ramone and his band. This tour has significantly raised KLAMMER.’s profile and advance copies of the new album were close to selling out during the tour.

THEATRE OF HATE: KINSHI Album Review

THEATRE OF HATE
KINSHI
(Pledge Music)
Goth-rock giants release first album in 30 years.
8/10

Theatre Of Hate have released their first official album in 30 years, ‘Kinshi’. The London based post-punk and gothic rock 5-piece formed in 1980 led by Kirk Brandon, a singer-songwriter formerly of The Pack. Kirk was joined by guitarist Steve Guthrie, bassist Stan Stammers (formerly of the Straps and the Epileptics), saxophonist John “Boy” Lennard and drummer Luke Rendle (formerly of Crisis and the Straps) and debut album ‘Westworld’ was released in 1982 before they split to form Spear of Destiny that same year. Since 2014, the band have reformed and began recording at Oxygen Studios in Manchester. New album ‘Kinshi’, part-funded by pledgers, features a blend of dark atmospheres, with allied guitar and saxophone alongside expressive lyricism and the true musicianship you only find between lifelong band members. The lead single of the album is also named ‘Kinshi’, which means ‘forbidden’ in Japanese.
